5. Spiritual vs Natural Mind
5. Spiritual vs Natural Mind
Every person’s life and decision-making ability is based on their way of thinking over time. The Bible suggests that our thinking is not neutral. It is influenced by our human nature or by God’s Spirit. This creates a clear distinction between the natural mind and the spiritual mind. We just often fail to recognize it.
The natural mind is influenced by worldliness and self, but the spiritual mind is guided by God’s truth and His Spirit. I think it is vital for each of us to understand this difference, because our mental attitude determines our direction, our choices, and ultimately our spiritual life. In Romans 8:5–7 we read: “For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. The mind occupied with the flesh is death, but the mind occupied with the Spirit is life and peace. Because the mind occupied with the flesh is hostile to God, for it is not subject to the Law of God, nor indeed can it be....” One of the most striking differences in the Christian life is the difference between the natural mind and the spiritual mind. In Romans 8, the apostle Paul explains that each person lives under the influence of one of these two mental attitudes. Remember, this is not about intelligence, education, or outward behavior—it is about inner direction. The direction of your mind determines the direction of your life. Simply put, the natural mind is controlled by the flesh. The spiritual mind is led by the Holy Spirit.
That is why the outcome is so different. The carnal mind leads to death, while the spiritual mind brings life and peace.
1. The Natural Mind Defined
Romans 8:5 “For those who are in the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh.” “Flesh” The Greek word “sarx” does not refer to just the physical body; it refers to the fallen human nature that operates apart from God. This nature is selfish, and prioritizes one’s own desires and feelings over the will of God. A mind driven by this (sarx) focuses more on temporal and material things, ignoring spiritual truths. Living in opposition to the Spirit of God and hindering growth in the spiritual life. Therefore, changing from this natural mind to a new mind led by the Spirit is a major challenge in the Christian life.
Characteristics of the Carnal Mind.
Romans 8:7 says the mind of the flesh is enmity against God. The natural mind resists God’s authority and rejects God’s ways. It is unwilling to submit to God’s law. It is not because it is weak—it is against God. When we read about the Israelites in the wilderness in Numbers 13–14, God promised them the land of Canaan, but when the spies who were sent saw the giants, they were afraid. We are amazed to hear their reaction of trembling and disbelief: “in our own sight we were like grasshoppers, as we were in their sight also” What a tragic example of a carnal mind at work. Does this not reveal a mindset governed by human reasoning rather than faith? These were people who listened more to their circumstances than to God, allowed fear to control their decisions, and neglected the promises He had given them. The result was devastating—they forfeited the blessings God had prepared for them.
We see a similar pattern in 1 Samuel 15. Saul was given a clear command from God, yet he chose to disobey. Rather than humbly acknowledging his sin, he attempted to justify his actions with human logic and seemingly reasonable explanations. Saul's failure reminds us that a carnal mind often seeks excuses for disobedience, while a spiritual mind responds with trust and obedience to God's Word.
This is partial obedience, and partial obedience is disobedience. Just as half-truths become lies. Justifying oneself. Being controlled by human fear rather than by God. This is how the natural mind works.
2. The spiritual mind is defined.
Romans 8:5. “but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.” The spiritual mind is to be understood as being governed by the Holy Spirit. It acts in harmony with the will of God, just as the Son acts in harmony with the will of the Father. It focuses on eternal realities.
Characteristics of the Spiritual Mind.
Romans 8:6 “but the mind occupied with the Spirit is life and peace.” The spiritual mind produces life, vitality, divine purpose, and spiritual power. It springs from a life in harmony with the Spirit of God. Peace is its deepest fruit—an inner stability that transcends circumstances. It dispels fear and strengthens the heart. This mind maintains calm even in the face of trials and pressures. It increases faith in God, gives wisdom to make right decisions, and aligns life with God’s will.
Listen to Caleb and Joshua. Numbers 14:6–9 When the others were afraid, Caleb and Joshua said: “the LORD is with us. Do not be afraid of them.” This reveals a spiritual state of mind. Focusing on God’s promise, anchored in faith, and courageously standing firm in the face of challenges. As a result, they were able to enter the Promised Land.
Now, listen to Satan tempting Jesus in the wilderness. This has been mentioned before. That passage is from Matthew 4:1–11. What was Jesus’ response? “It is written...” Word-based answers. This showed reliance on God’s Word, rejection of fleshly desires, and submission to God’s will. This is the perfect expression of a spiritual mind.
3. The Focus of Each Mind
a. The Carnal Mind. Philippians 3:19 They set their minds on earthly things. The natural mind focuses on pleasure, success, fear, and human approval. It is driven to make decisions based on what it sees and experiences. It is controlled by external circumstances. Therefore, it is less stable; happiness and peace will change depending on circumstances, because it depends on the world more than on God.
b. The spiritual mind.
Colossians 3:2 “Set your affection on things above,...” The spiritual mind focuses on the kingdom of God, eternal values, God’s will, and spiritual growth. The spiritual mind is guided by eternal truths that are invisible to the eyes of the flesh. Faith is its foundation. It does not focus on temporal things but stands in the will of God, giving stability in the heart and a firm sense of direction in the presence of God.
4. The conflict between the two.
Galatians 5:17 “For the flesh desires what is against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh.” are at odds…”
Let us not forget that there is a constant battle between these. When the flesh is drawn to sin, the spirit is drawn to God. This conflict occurs within every believer. We cannot ignore it. These are matters that need to be handled with great care. Listen to Peter. Matthew 16:16–23
Listen to Peter’s first declaration: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God…” (spiritual revelation). Then, when he speaks of the crucifixion, he rebukes Jesus. Notice Jesus’ response: “You are not thinking of the things of God, but of the things of men.” One moment: spiritual mind. The next moment: carnal mind. How fickle it is. This shows how easily the mind can change. Its hallmark is instability. That is why the power and help of the Holy Spirit are so essential to the spiritual man.
5. The fruits of every mind.
A. The fruit of the carnal mind. Romans 8:6 “The mind occupied with flesh is death.” Spiritual dryness, separation from God, and inner emptiness are seen here. They lead to destruction over time. John 12:4–6; Matthew 26:14–16 Greed and selfishness led Judas, one of Jesus’ followers, to betray him. What was the result? Betrayal, spiritual destruction. A carnal mind ultimately distances itself from God.
B. The fruit of the spiritual mind. Romans 8:6 “The mind occupied with the Spirit is life and peace.” Joy, stability, clarity, and fellowship with God are all included. When listening to Stephen, Acts 7:55–60. Even when he was stoned, Stephen: saw the glory of God, forgave his enemies, and continued in peace. His prayer was “Lord, do not put this sin to their account” This is the power of a spirit-filled mind. What a lofty personality.
6. How to move from a carnal mind to a spiritual mind
1. Through the Word. Romans 12:2. The mind is renewed through the Word of God. The Word of God is essential. According to Romans 12:2, when the mind is renewed through the Word, the will of God, or the mind of God, can be discerned. Spiritual growth is possible when we abandon worldly thinking and meditate on and obey the Scriptures. The Word of God transforms the heart and thoughts into the nature of Christ.
2. Through the Holy Spirit. John 16:13. The Spirit leads into truth. The leading of the Holy Spirit is essential here. According to John 16:13, the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of truth, guides the believer into all truth. When we surrender to the Spirit, wrong thinking can be changed and the will of God can be understood. The Holy Spirit develops spiritual understanding and the mind of Christ in the believer.
3. By daily surrender. Luke 9:23. Self-denial brings us into harmony with the Spirit. We must deny ourselves and take up our cross each day and follow Christ. Harmony with the Spirit grows as we give priority to God’s will over our own desires. This surrender leads the believer to spiritual maturity and the character of Christ.
4. By setting our minds. Romans 8:5. We must intentionally focus on spiritual things. We must set our minds on spiritual things. According to Romans 8:5, those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, while those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the spirit. When we focus on prayer, meditation, and the will of God, our thoughts are transformed and our spiritual life is strengthened.
Finally, Romans 8 clearly reveals two mindsets and two ways of living. The carnal mind: opposes God, focuses on the flesh, and leads to death. The spiritual mind: submits to God, focuses on the Spirit, and leads to life and peace. The difference between failure and success in the Christian life is often not external circumstances, but internal thinking. Your life will move in the direction of your mind - your mind must be led by the Spirit.
